Chairman's Message

In the years of serving as Board Chairman of the Louisiana Children’s Trust Fund, I have often reflected on my own childhood and I realized how fortunate I am for my family. I was raised in a loving, caring family with that unconditional love we hope for all children.

My role model mentors were definitely my parents. I have always wanted to be just like my Dad. I watched him everyday helping people; be it family,
friends or neighbors. No one was a stranger. He instilled in me by example, a work ethic and devotion to family. My biggest regret has been that my father died too young, at the age of sixty-one (61). In living my life, I hope to prove to be half the man he was.

If my father was my “hero,” then my mother was my “she-ro” She has a nurturing and loving spirit. As a school teacher, she was everybody’s “mother.” I have many “brothers” and “sisters” who were students of my mother. Because of that, I have a very large “extended family.”

These family values of my parents are ones I strive to instill in my own immediate family. One of my favorite quotes was made at a public forum when a father apologized for being late because he had been “babysitting” his children. I reminded that father, that it isn’t “babysitting” if it is your own child. I have always realized the importance and value of a father’s presences in a child’s life. I know the most important thing I can do for my daughter as she grows is to lead by example.

The loving warm feeling that I felt from my parents, and their consistent, unconditional support and belief in me, are what the Louisiana Children’s Trust Fund hopes for all Louisiana’s children. In this State Plan we share with you the positive impact that has been made in child abuse and neglect prevention for over twenty-five (25) years through the many Children’s Trust Fund programs statewide. Whether it is with parent support groups; home visitation programs for first time moms; school-based safety education; professional trainings or public awareness campaigns, CHILD ABUSE AND NEGLECT CAN BE PREVENTED.

My mentor was also the mentor of many young boys and girls, but I got to call him Dad. My father, Dr. Harold Levy, was a pediatrician who specialized in children with disabilities. He had served as President of the National Academy of Cerebral Palsy, but his particular interest were children with learning disabilities.

My dad loved children and lived with a genuine compassion for people. He treated everyone with equal respect. I remember how he had integrated waiting rooms with one water fountain, which wasn’t the norm in the late fifties. He did have a separate waiting room for teenagers, so they wouldn’t be embarrassed waiting with toddlers. If a patient needed a shot, he gave it to them himself. He didn’t think it was fair to have the nurse do it.

On his “days off”, he always spent the morning at the Shrine Hospital and Parish Health Units before playing golf in the afternoon. Service came first. I can remember working in his office during the summer and families “paying their bills” with a dozen eggs or a basket of vegetables. No one was denied medical attention. He continued giving house calls until he lost partial eyesight and could no longer drive.

My brothers and I had to convince him to retire from his pediatric practice, because at his age he couldn’t risk getting sick. He did, however, continue seeing children with learning disabilities from all over this country.

My dad truly lived by the advice he gave his grandson, my son Andrew, when he was about to graduate from college. He told him there were three principles to live by when choosing a career:

1. Love what you do in life;
2. Be fairly compensated for your work; and
3. At the end of the day, know that you have made a difference in someone’s life.

These are words that I will always remember and live by.
